The Nigerian Government has banned the production, Importation and sale of Codein in the country according to the Minister for Health.
This was in reaction to the abuse of the drug in Northern Nigeria which has reached an epidemic rate although the substance is not abused in the southern part of the country.
Codein is a substance in cough Syrup used in the treatment of dry and persistent cough.
About 3 million bottles of Codein is consumed in Northern Nigeria daily.
However missed reactions have trailled the ban from Nigerians as many have called for regulation of the drug instead of an outright ban.
